Careerminds reveal the worst caffeine drinks that cause the biggest crash at work
23 September 2026
UNITED KINGDOM, October 2026 – With the weather beginning to cool, the return of the pumpkin spice latte marks the unofficial start of autumn. With this in mind, Careerminds UK analysed the caffeine and sugar content of 10 popular coffee-shop drinks to find out which ones help employees stay focused through the working day, and which are most likely to trigger the dreaded afternoon slump.
Key findings:
- The pumpkin spice latte is the most sugary drink analysed, with 50g of sugar in a grande, 1.7 times the NHS daily limit.
- Two in five popular coffee orders (40.0%) exceed the NHS’s 30g daily free sugar limit in a single grande cup.
- High-sugar drinks also carry 150mg or more of caffeine, fuelling the 3pm slump and harming productivity.
- Coffee with colleagues doesn’t have to go: swapping a pumpkin spice latte for a plain latte cuts sugar by 64.0% for steadier focus.
“When enjoyed in moderation, caffeine can absolutely play a positive role in the workplace. These speciality drinks don’t just provide a physical boost; they’ve also become rituals that many younger professionals associate with motivation and mood”, said Amanda Augustine, resident careers expert at Careerminds UK and a Certified Professional Career Coach (CPCC).
“Indulging in these elaborate, often seasonal offerings can make the workday feel more enjoyable”, Augustine added. “In many ways, they’re romanticising their jobs through these small moments, and that added sense of happiness and connection can translate into better focus, energy and even team engagement”.
The full research findings are below:
- The coffee orders with the most sugar and caffeine: Not all coffee orders are created equal when it comes to getting through the working day. Black coffees and espresso-heavy drinks such as the Caffè Americano (225mg), cold brew (205mg) and flat white (195mg) carry the most caffeine, with 17g of sugar or less. The flavoured drinks on seasonal menus pair a similar 150mg–175mg caffeine hit with 33g–50g of sugar, which gives a quick lift followed by a sharper dip later in the day.

Source: Careerminds UK analysis of Starbucks’ published nutrition information, September 2026. The NHS daily sugar limit is the NHS’s recommended maximum of 30g of free sugars a day for adults.
- The sugar in a pumpkin spice latte can trigger the 3pm slump: The pumpkin spice latte tops the sugar ranking at 50g per grande, 166.7% of the NHS’s 30g daily limit for adults in a single drink. It also carries 150mg of caffeine, which lands on top of the body’s natural afternoon energy dip.
- Smart caffeine habits keep productivity on track: Flavoured and sweetened drinks average 37.8g of sugar per grande, 4 times the 9.4g found in unflavoured coffees such as a latte, flat white or Americano. The Caffè Americano packs the most caffeine of any drink analysed at 225mg, 1.5 times that of a pumpkin spice latte, but with no sugar at all. The iced matcha latte is the gentlest on caffeine at 65mg, though its 25g of sugar still uses up 83.3% of the daily limit.
- Coffee breaks with colleagues boost productivity and team engagement: It isn’t just what you drink that matters. How and when you take your coffee break plays a crucial role in workplace performance. Research from Connect Vending found that skipping coffee breaks with colleagues led to a 23.0% drop in productivity and a 70.0% rise in the likelihood of considering resignation. Stepping away from the desk and connecting with colleagues helps employees recharge, strengthens team bonds and reduces stress.
“The lesson here isn’t to cut out coffee, it’s to be smarter about what’s in the cup and to protect the break itself”, Augustine added. “Swapping a syrup-heavy seasonal drink for a plain latte and taking 10 minutes away from the desk with a colleague will do more for your afternoon than a second pumpkin spice latte”.

Methodology
Careerminds UK analysed the caffeine and sugar content of 10 popular coffee-shop drinks in September 2026, using the standard-recipe grande (473ml) nutrition information published by Starbucks. Caffeine per 100ml was calculated from each drink’s total caffeine content. Sugar figures were compared against the NHS recommended maximum of 30g of free sugars a day for adults.
